Halloween is quickly approaching, so naturally that means the time has come to face an onslaught of wildly inappropriate Halloween costumes. We begin with the sexy handmaid.
Online lingerie and costume store Yandy is to thank for this cringe-inducing costume. Referred to as the "Brave Red Maiden Costume" it is very clearly modeled after the white bonnet and red caped handmaid characters on Hulu's award-winning drama The Handmaid's Tale.
SEE ALSO: Show me a better Paddington Bear costume than this tiny dog's. SHOW ME.The series follows women suffering at the hands of a cruel totalitarian society in a dystopian world that treats them like broodmares.
The costume itself includes a white bonnet, a red sleeveless cape, and a short red miniskirt.
The handmaid uniform women are forced to wear in the series is meant to denote their status as handmaids. The women are forced against their will to have sex with high-ranking men in hopes that they can procreate, as most women in the fictional world of Gilead are unable to have children. This sexed-up handmaid costume makes light of a harmful misogynistic culture that actively allows and encourages the rape and denigration of women, which is beyond gross.
You can buy the costume on Yandy for $64.95, but I highly recommend you not do that. Please.
Please excuse me while I scream into a pillow.
