Daenerys Targaryen looks unstoppable. She's finally in Westeros,Sedan Sex (2018) with a massive army and three dragons the size of commercial jetliners.
Seeing as dragons are the most powerful weapon in the Game of Thronesuniverse, the show could play out like this: the khaleesi roasts her enemies, becomes queen, and the rest of the series is Ed Sheeran singing Westerosi slow jams over rom-com montages of Tormund wooing Brienne of Tarth.
SEE ALSO: 'Game of Thrones' cast asks a Magic 8 Ball about their Season 7 fatesThe more likely option: Something bad will happen to Daenerys to even the odds. And I'm pretty sure that involves Cersei getting her hands on a dragon.
The man who'll make that happen is Euron Greyjoy, aka Ramsay Bolton of the Sea.
He swaggered into Cersei's court in the Season 7 premiere dressed like an aging rockstar. When she shut down his offer of marriage, he says this:
"In my experience, the surest way to a woman’s heart is with a gift. A priceless gift. I won’t return to King's Landing until I have that for you."
Sure, it could be Tyrion's head or some lemon cakes. But I'm pretty sure that gift is a dragon.
In the books, Euron finds something called the Dragonbinder, a 6-foot-long horn with Valyrian glyphs that sounds like the "screaming of a thousand souls" when blown and has the nasty side effect of killing people.
But it also gives you the power to control dragons.
And, as we noted before, the Game of Thronestrailer suuure makes it look like Yara and Ellaria --part of Daenerys' crew -- dive into the water to escape dragonfire.
If that's what happens, it's likely Euron played some sweet dragon jazz and took control of Viserion, Rhaegal, or Drogon (or maybe even more than one) and turned them on Daenerys' forces.
That would make things very, very interesting.
Remember back in Season 3, when Daenerys frees the slaves in Astapor with her tiny dragons, and the show cuts to her looking badass with a wall of flame behind her like in an '80s action movie?
Imagine that, but with a menacing Cersei instead.
I need to see that. Daenerys is like Jon Snow: noble, inspiring, and kind of boring.
But Cersei is captivating. Lena Headey exhibits more emotional complexity with one eyebrow raise than Jon Snow has over seven seasons of doing, well, this:
Via GiphyShe's backed incompetent men and boys for the whole series. Finally, she's in charge -- and she's fighting for her survival with no checks on her power.
Giving her a weapon of mass destruction would be the most interesting thing the show could do.
Not only would we watch as she spirals into Mad King mode, raining down fire on her enemies, but it could set up the most epic battle in a show filled with epic battles.
Say Cersei has a dragon. Daenerys has a dragon. The other is dead or maybe even under control of the Night King.
George R.R. Martin's story The Princess and The Queen, or, The Blacks and The Greens describes the civil war that tore Westeros and the Targaryen family apart, and it's full of dragon-on-dragon combat:
"Though armies marched and met in savage battle, much of the slaughter took place on water, and… especially… in the air, as dragon fought dragon with tooth and claw and flame."
So it's not like this would be something that's never happened before.
If the writers want to raise the stakes and make us sweat over Daenerys' once seemingly inevitable rise to power, a dragon death match is the way to do it. Make this happen, HBO.
