NFTs are Girlfriend Who is Crazy About Big Thingspointless and you should never buy them. Now that we've got that out of the way, TMZ reports that viral video star Nathan Apodaca is listing his popular skateboarding TikTok as a non-fungible token, with bids starting at $500,000.
Again: You do not need to buy this.
Even if you don't know Apodaca's name, you probably know his video — or have seen one of the countless parodies and recreations that have proliferated across the internet. In the 23-second long TikTok posted in Sept. 2020, Apodaca (aka @420doggface208) lazily skateboards down an empty street while drinking Ocean Spray cran-raspberry juice and lip syncing to Fleetwood Mac's 1977 song "Dreams."
The video went viral, amassing 12.6 million likes on TikTok alone. It was so popular that even Fleetwood Mac members Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks recorded their own versions, and Ocean Spray gifted Apodaca a new truck. He also got his own line of laidback merchandise.
Now Apodaca has partnered with crypto-focused media company CryptoCake to list the clip on NFT marketplace Rarible this Friday, asking for a starting bid of at least half a million dollars. Apodaca's management confirmed the listing to Mashable, saying the listing will go live at 11 a.m.
SEE ALSO: Think cryptocurrency is bad? NFTs are even worse. The video won't be quite as potential buyers remember it, though. It won't have the iconic Fleetwood Mac soundtrack since Apodaca does't have rights to that, and the Ocean Spray logo will be blurred out for the same reason. Instead, the clip will presumably show Apodaca silently skateboarding to work, chugging a nondescript red drink.
So in some ways, the $500,000 clip is actually an inferior product to the one you can already watch practically anywhere on the internet for free.
Apodaca hopes to use the proceeds of the sale to buy his parents a house, as well as fund an event centre in Idaho Falls. Both are humble, noble causes of course, and he seems like pretty chill guy. But that still doesn't make purchasing what is essentially carbon hostile bragging rights in any way worth it.
