Another way to access Prime Video in these two regions is to subscribe to Amazon Prime for $10.99 a month and also get Prime Video along with unlimited music and photo storage. But in India, the Seattle-based company's on-demand video streaming service will be available for less than a dollar a month, if you act now.
Amazon India has confirmed to Mashable Indiathat existing Prime subscribers in the country will get access to Prime Video as part of Prime subscription. Amazon Prime was launched in India earlier this year and costs Rs 999 ($15) for a year-long subscription. As an introductory offer, Amazon is offering yearly Prime subscription to Indians at Rs 499 ($7.5).
"Existing Prime members will have access to unlimited streaming of Amazon Prime Video’s content as a part of their Prime membership, at no additional cost," said Amazon.
It is another matter that Amazon Prime Video is not available in India yet, but the launch is expected to happen within the next few weeks if media reports and content partnership announcements by Amazon India are any indication. Even if you'd like to wait for the Prime Video launch, Amazon India's annual subscription fee of $15 is still considerably cheaper than what users in the US and the UK pay.
Make no mistake, users in these two countries get a range of other services with their Prime subscription including free two-day shipping, music streaming service, unlimited books on Kindle, free unlimited storage. In contrast, Prime subscription in India currently offers one-day and two-day package delivery, and early access to online deals. It is also not clear right now is whether India will have the entire content catalog that is available in other countries.
Amazon has not revealed for how long it will offer Prime subscription at $7.5 introductory offer, but it has become clear that the company plans to charge much less for its content than its global rival Netflix. The most basic Netflix subscription costs Rs 500 ($7.5) a month in India.
Over the past few months, Amazon has been on a spree of acquiring exclusive rights for local Indian content. Amazon has partnership with major Indian Bollywood studios and distributors including Dharma Productions, T-Series for exclusive rights for a major chunk of their respective titles. Amazon has also acquired rights for select titles such as spin off of blockbuster Bollywood movie 'Baahubali', 'Super Bheem', 'Chhota Bheem' and others. Amazon India is also reportedly vying for digital streaming rights for the popular Indian Premier League cricket tournament.
